Due to the reduction of imports by the two major memory chip manufacturers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, South Korea's wafer imports from Japan fell to 203 million US dollars (currently about 1.382 billion yuan) in the fourth quarter of last year, down 26.66% year-on-year.

Affected by deteriorating market conditions, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are rapidly increasing their inventories, and the current inventory level has exceeded 20 weeks, much higher than their usual 5-6 weeks. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are also reducing wafer imports and production to control inventories amid high inventories and low market demand.
Reduced shipments from chip makers also means demand for key components such as wafers has declined. Foreign media mentioned in the report that due to the deterioration of market conditions, the inventory of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix is increasing rapidly, and the current inventory level has exceeded 20 weeks, far higher than their usual 5-6 weeks.
Amid high inventories and low market demand, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are also reducing wafer imports and production to control inventories. Of course, other major manufacturers are also cutting production amid declining global demand for memory chips. According to foreign media reports, memory chip manufacturers that are reducing production also include Micron, Kioxia and Western Digital. Micron decided to cut production to 80% last year, and Kioxia has cut production by 30% since October.
In the case of major memory chip manufacturers reducing production, their demand for wafers is bound to decrease, and the supply of related wafer manufacturers will also decrease.
