Global Smartphone Shipments to Fall 10% Year-on-year in 2022

A new study published by Strategy Analytics' Wireless Smartphone Strategy (WSS) service states that global smartphone shipments will decline by 10% year-on-year in 2022. The downward trajectory will continue into 2023, but with an improved annual growth rate of -5%. Global smartphone shipments will reach their lowest level since 2014. This is a very tough period for the industry as a whole.
In our latest forecast model, we have weighted multiple variables/assumptions, mainly including production disruptions in China due to the recovery of the new crown epidemic, ongoing inventory adjustments across the industry, geopolitical issues and a gloomy macroeconomic outlook. We expect Samsung and Apple to maintain their top two market shares. These two companies will outperform the overall market this year and next. By contrast, Xiaomi, OPPO (OnePlus) and Vivo will underperform the overall market and follow a downward trajectory in 2022 and 2023. In the Android market, only Google and Reliance Jio will see steady growth in 2023, thanks to a low base effect.
