Infineon Technologies AG (FSE code: IFX/OTCQX code: IFNNY) introduces two new XENSIV ™ air pressure (BAP) sensors for automotive applications: the KP464 and the KP466. The KP464 is mainly designed for engine control management, and the KP466 BAP sensor is mainly used for seat comfort functions.

The KP464 BAP sensor measures atmospheric pressure, which depends on altitude and weather conditions. The engine management system can use sensor measurements to calculate air density, ensuring an optimal air-fuel ratio. This is a key function for improving fuel efficiency and reducing power consumption.
Infineon's new generation KP466 BAP sensors enable seat manufacturers to implement innovative pneumatic seating systems with numerous additional features. These features not only improve comfort, but also offer significant technical advantages. For example, the Driving Dynamics feature automatically adjusts the lateral support of the seat according to the current driving condition, providing the occupant with optimal stability in a variety of situations, including cornering.
This optimized solution significantly reduces power consumption and features miniaturized five-hole housing. The system continuously monitors the pressure status and adjusts the seat cushion pressure according to current requirements. To this end, the system uses multiple absolute pressure sensors to monitor pressure throughout the system. This Infineon sensor also supports SPI for efficient system communication.
Both KP464 and KP466 sensors are high performance, high precision, miniaturized digital absolute pressure sensors based on the capacitive measurement principle. Both sensors meet the AEC-Q103-002 standard and meet the requirements of the automotive industry. As a result, these devices reduce the workload and risk of module and system certification errors. Its surface is micromachined and has a single integrated signal conditioning circuit. Both devices can convert physical pressure into 10-, 12- or 14-bit digital values and transmit information via the SPI interface.
In addition, the two sensors can also be integrated into the daisy chain, which minimizes the number of connected pins of the communication microcontroller and supports the use of any number of pressure sensors. And it can also be used in combination with other Infineon system components. Not only that, but also a temperature sensor is integrated on the chip. 10-12- or 14-bit temperature information will also be transmitted via the SPI interface according to the received SPI command. Both sensors come with a special power saving mode, allowing users to further reduce the sensor's power consumption. In addition, it also integrates diagnostic functions for testing sensor units and signal paths, improving the reliability of the device. This diagnosis is done automatically when the sensor starts and wakes up, and can also be triggered directly via SPI commands.
