NXP Semiconductors N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI) announced the EdgeLock SE051H, a security chip designed specifically for Matter, further adding to the industry's broadest portfolio of Matter devices. The EdgeLock SE051H is a single-chip solution with NFC integration designed to simplify secure on-boarding of Matter devices and deliver a new smart home user experience - automation recommendations, installation videos and more at the touch of an NFC-enabled phone.
The recently introduced Matter standard, designed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) to address device interoperability challenges in smart home networks, raises the bar for smart home security by requiring multiple features, including encryption key pairs, digital certificates and other security-related hardware and firmware, to protect smart home devices. edgeLock SE051H is optimized to support meeting these requirements, including algorithms and encryption features required by Matter, among others, enabling device manufacturers to easily integrate the necessary security protections into end devices. Security is a fundamental element of the future smart home, so the Matter standard was designed with security in mind early on," said Philippe Dubois, senior vice president and general manager of NXP's Secure Transactions and Identity Division. With the single-chip EdgeLock SE051H, developers can easily provide security for their Matter-certified smart home devices, while the integrated NFC enhances the end-user experience with Matter, allowing device manufacturers to stand out with a great user experience." The EdgeLock SE051H has been certified to Common Criteria EAL 6+, which supports the cryptographic operations required for Matter-certified smart devices. These include Matter device authentication and certificate-based authentication using ECC cryptography and the NIST P-256 curve, as well as the SPAKE2+ algorithm for cryptographic authentication key exchange. To protect the Matter protocol, the chip is also equipped with key security features such as ECDSA, ECDH and a true random number generator. In addition, the EdgeLock SE051H integrates an NFC interface as well as Class 4 tagging capabilities. As a security requirement for Matter, the device verification certificate can be used to confirm device authenticity, prove trustworthiness and establish connections to larger Matter networks with experience tags. NXP is one of the first semiconductor manufacturers to be granted Trusted Product Certification Body status by the CSA, and its EdgeLock 2GO service provides a flexible platform for securely configuring IoT devices. When used in conjunction with EdgeLock SE051H, EdgeLock 2GO can pre-inject certificates directly into the chip at wafer fabrication or securely issue certificates via Over-the-Air Remote (OTA), which provides end-to-end security to simplify supply chain management and comply with Matter standards.
