Samsung rumored to cut DDR4 chip prices as consumer DRAM price drop widens

According to media reports, industry sources have revealed that Samsung has cut chip prices for 4Gb DDR4, which is seen as a strategic measure to accelerate the company's shift from DDR3 to DDR4.
The source said Samsung continues to scale back its DDR3 chip production while offering more cost-effective DDR4 chip prices to attract orders for applications that still require DDR3 memory, such as consumer electronics. As Samsung cuts DDR4 chip prices, suppliers of DDR3 memory may also lower their offers to maintain orders. Sources said the drop in consumer DRAM prices is expected to expand in the second half of this year. It is reported that the Korean original manufacturers, under the pressure of increasing output, are significantly more willing to let prices increase in order to stimulate suppliers and customers to pull goods, prompting the price drop to continue to expand. Market research firm TrendForce has previously indicated that in addition to the active price concessions by Korean manufacturers, spot low-priced particles are also circulating in the market, and other suppliers are forced to follow suit and actively reduce prices for sales, causing the third quarter consumer DRAM price drop from the original estimate of 8%-13% to 13% to 13%-18%. In addition, while phasing out DDR3 production, Samsung and SK Hynix accelerated the conversion from old to new production lines and expanded their DDR5 chip production. According to industry sources, these moves will limit their overall DRAM growth.
