It is reported that at the presentation meeting for investors held by Sony on the 27th, the president of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, a subsidiary of Sony semiconductor business, revealed that Sony would increase the production capacity of Nagasaki factory (in Nagasaki county), the main image sensor factory.
Although the investment amount and capacity details have not been announced, the area of the latest cleaning workshop put into use in April 2021 among the five plants has expanded by 60% compared with that in July this year, reaching about 37000 square meters.
Sony predicts that the advanced smart phone image sensor market will expand by about 10% annually by 2030. With the popularization of automatic driving, sensors are indispensable for the vehicle to recognize obstacles and other functions, so the consultation from the automotive field is also greatly increased. Sony will increase its investment in image sensor equipment by 200billion yen to 900billion yen over the original plan within three years in fiscal year 2023 (March 2024).
In the field of global image sensors, Sony is a well deserved "brother" in the industry. According to the data of Strategy Analytics, a market research institution, Sony semiconductor solutions ranks first in the global smart phone image sensor market with 45% revenue share, followed by Samsung with 26% and Howe with 11%.
